Lup-20(29)-ene-3,28-diol; Lup-20(30)-ene-3-beta,28-diol; Betulol
A naturally occurring pentacyclic triterpene, Betulin is commonly isolated from the bark of birch trees. It is an important phytochemical platform which, together with numerous other members of the Betulin family, can be converted into a variety of pharmacologically important precursors and drugs. Owing to its anti-inflammatory properties, Betulin and its derivatives have found application if wound healing and topical cosmetic creams. Other studies have shown that these substances exhibit anticancer and heptoprotectorant qualities and are being investigated as selective inhibitors of human melanoma, brain cancer and HIV.
